our history
There is a window, at Locanda La Scottiglia, that tells it all.
It was 1971. The old plaster of the dining room was knocked down and under decades of lime a painted sign emerged: “Antica Locanda Da Momo”. The original name. The beginning of it all.
The story begins in 1890, in Pescina, a small hamlet of Seggiano on Monte Amiata. It was here that the family opened an inn to welcome travellers coming up from the Val d'Orcia to the extinct volcano. Grandfather Delio recounted that the family would give up their room to travellers and make do elsewhere. Hospitality was not a service. It was a choice.
Today we are in the fifth generation. Massimo and Fabio, cousins, run the same inn, with the same naturalness.

Scottiglia di Pescina is not a generic Tuscan dish. It is the Sunday soup of this village, prime pork, beef, turkey and chicken meat that cooks for over eight hours, served on homemade bread with a drizzle of Seggiano DOP olive oil.
Born in the houses of Pescina, refined by Zì Palmira in our kitchen since 1890, recognised as a Traditional Food Product (PAT) by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture.
Fabio prepares it every day, in this same kitchen, with the same recipe. We are its custodians.

DANIEL SPOERRI'S TABLEAU PIÈGE
There is a work of art in our dining room that resembles no other painting. It does not hang on the wall. It is the wall.
In 2018, Daniel Spoerri, one of the great masters of international contemporary art, came to eat with us. He ate at our place many times. And at the end of the meal, he did what he has been doing for decades: he fixed the table on the wall, exactly as it was. The plates with the remains of the Scottiglia, the glasses, the cutlery, the wine-stained glasses, two bottles of Brunello di Montalcino.
His garden-museum is located a few kilometres away, in Seggiano. But his most intimate work, perhaps, is this: the table of a real dinner, in a real place.

Pescina is a hamlet of Seggiano, on Monte Amiata. It is not a postcard place. It is a real place, with a real history. From the window of the dining room, you can see the vineyards and olive groves of Seggiano and Montalcino, then the Val d'Orcia opening towards the Maremma. And every evening, one of the most beautiful sunsets in Tuscany.
